MACESS yesterday and today
MACESS was established in 1994 by a six-member Erasmus Network (that has now grown to include 37 members). Since 1994 the course has grown into a well respected and highly acclaimed Master of Arts course.
15 years ago we started with a pioneering conviction: a comparative European approach is essential in the social professions due to the increased interdependence of states, i.e., social policies, practices and problems. There was a clear need to translate this idea into a university curriculum. This translation included an analysis of the European Social Model, the role of the (activating) state and civil society, and measures to integrate excluded groups. As a result, MACESS became the first Joint Course of its Kind.
What is MACESS today?
MACESS is in its 15th year of providing graduate students with high academic training in advanced studies and bringing together social professional work, social policy and social research. MACESS can boast of a solid academic network of scholars and experts committed to high quality instruction and research (many of whom are internationally acclaimed); a rich and diverse pool of resources via a network of international academics, social professional bodies and ±300 alumni with established careers as policy makers, scholars and practitioners; and noteworthy contributions to scholarly publications and international research projects.
Lastly, MACESS makes every attempt to invest in itself by inviting talented alumni with specific research and professional expertise into the MACESS lecturing and research teams.
