What does a MACESS year look like?
MACESS MODULES
All students spend the first part of the course (September – February) in Maastricht for the delivery of the lectured programme. The core modules are directed at the whole student group until Christmas. The group is then split into smaller study groups for the optional modules in January and February. This is followed by (supervised) self-study from March until August. Each module is led and jointly taught by a scholar from the MACESS Network. The allocation of modules to module leaders is based on academic expertise in the subject matter. Each module takes two weeks to complete with study weeks in-between.
MACESS SCHOLARS
MACESS scholars and experts are at the forefront of social professional education and practice in their own countries. They continuously take their passion for social inquiry to the European level through research and participation in joint projects. This is fundamental to the sustainability of the programme. They are visible in current specific transnational co-operations and take leadership roles in European level movements (read more on our network page).
A core group of lecturers that are at the forefront of national and European issues in social work education means that students get access to the most current issues, discussions and approaches in social professional practice, policy implications and research in Europe and beyond. For MACESS this interactive, multifaceted input is essential to ensure ‘state of the art’ education, coaching and, not least of all, to stimulate critical thinking about current social challenges.
RESEARCH
Students conduct their individual research dissertation which may include travel to another country. They are encouraged to link themselves to the research centres or programmes of the MACESS Network (please see our network page). Ultimately, all institutions in the academic Network can host and supervise MACESS students during the research period.
MA DEGREE
The Course totals 90 ECTS and successful student receive the MACESS degree awarded by LondonMet (UK).
