Leadership and Management of Social Organisations in Europe

Context
Attitudes, skills and methods are needed for a proper management and leadership. Only if a social organization is well managed, it could provide good social work, it deserves a higher reputation in society and it could even legitimate the costs that public money invest in it. Social services and social work form one of the largest branches in Europe, and as such it can’t do without a “social” management with ethical dimensions, measurable and sustainable outcomes for individuals, society and the organization itself.
Audience
This short course will be of interest to people who like to understand how management and leadership work and what the current ideas and challenges are, especially for social organisations. The module is helpful for managers, people who are preparing for a job as a leader or manager and for all who like to improve their management skills for the day to day management tasks, which entails dealing with limited resources and different people.
Content
The course starts with an overview of organization theories and about behaviour in organization, which has its own rules.
Some theories of management are checked according to their usefulness for social organizations. The second week focuses leadership as a subject that differs from management and has a lot of overlapping themes, special requirements and ethical dimensions.

- Political on welfare organisations

- Change and the organisation, group and individual
- Ethical aspects of management and leadership
- Models for change
- Developing new projects and innovations
- Applying for funding

Course leader
Prof. Dr. Armin Schneider, born 1964, is professor of social management and Empirical Social Research at the University of Applied Studies in Koblenz. Studying social work, education, psychology and Catholic theology in Koblenz, Frankfurt am Main and Vienna, he held senior positions in the church's youth services. He earned his doctorate in 2005 on the ethical and theological perspectives of the organizational and personnel development. Schneider is a consultant for human resources and organizational development.
